SOME WRITING ON THE BAND:
Anyone who saw the
TV documentary on Madchester in the early nineties that
was presented by James Brown and Stuart Maconie will remember
MC Tunes!
Tunes was the star of the show, giving
the rest of the country an idea about what made Madchester
Mad. Saying that, all I can remember him saying was nish,
nesh, banging!!
Tunes was a talented rapper and made two
forays into the Top Forty alongside 808 State. The first
single was entitled The Only Rap That Bites and the follow
up was Tunes Splits The Atom. 808 State provided the,
errr, tunes and our nish nesh friend supplied the lyrics
- at 101 mph!
It was probably the first introduction
a lot of pop kids had to rap. And it was a pretty good
introduction.
But the music is not what I remember most
about MC Tunes! My lasting memory occurred on a visit
to the Konspiracy nightclub - a sprawling underground
maze of a place. 808 State were Djing in the back room
and someone that looked remarkably like Tunes took to
the floor.
He danced like he rapped. His feet were
grooving about faster and faster. Like a Manchester roadrunner.
But his intricate steps were too quick for his own feet
and he ended up on the floor! Very funny…
To be honest it might not have been him
and if it wasn't I apologise.
I guess most people thought Tunes
was a five minutes of fame fella, but he went onto record
as the Dust Junkies and made some quality tunes. Nish
nesh banging!
