SOME WRITING ON THE BAND:
I had heard
if Primal Scream but it wasn't until the release of Loaded
that I really sat up and took notice! Fronted by the charismatic
former Jesus and the Mary Chain member, Bobby Gillespie,
they'd been a pretty heavy, intense indie band - but from
the opening words and chords of Loaded it was obvious
they had discovered a new scene
"We want to be free, free to
do what we want to do, and we want to get loaded and we
want to have a good time and that's what we're gonna do
haway
baby let's go
."
It is one of the classic 'indie-dance'
records, a relaxed groove that people started dancing
to in the early nineties and they haven't stopped yet!
The B-side of Loaded, 'I'm Losing
More Than I Ever Had' (which Loaded is loosely based on)
is a beautiful, heart rendering song - definitely one
for a compilation tape you're putting together for a new
girlfriend!!
Loaded featured on the classic album,
Screamadelica, which won the first ever Mercury Music
Prize. It's a great album and features classic tracks
such as Come Together (although the single version is
better!), Moving On Up and Higher Than The Sun. If you
don't own a copy you really should!
I spent a year at a university in
America just after its release and it was played an awful
lot during my stay, particularly during all night drinking
and card sessions! My fellow Americans, who were all listening
to Guns and Roses and Extreme at the time, obviously didn't
approve as one day my beloved CD went missing.
I was gutted as it wasn't the sort
of CD you could pick up in the US easily. A couple of
days later though I came across it in the undergrowth
outside my hall - some funny fella had thrown it out of
the window cos I was playing it too much! There's no accounting
for taste!
Primal Scream have release
a number of critically acclaimed albums since Screamadelica
and signed bassist Mani on a free transfer from The Stone
Roses. But I doubt they'll ever surpass Screamadelica
in the eyes of many fans - it's a quality record.
